Guest Guide Book

Guest Guide Book consists of a 60 drawer card catalog cabinet, a wooden library stool, and a set of 4 wall mounted narrow metal shelves. Dimensions of the complete installa-tion are variable.
2001 - ongoing

The 60 drawers are used to house ongoing collections – such as KK Names- first and last names that begin with the letter k; sketchbook subject index; and Texts (actual and potential texts for my artists’ books).

In my studio the cabi-net and drawers are a valuable resource. In an exhibition context the installation invites interaction. Viewers can sit on the stool; open a drawer and page through the contents. Drawers can be re-moved and placed on one of three pull out shelves for closer examination.

A more orchestrated interaction uses the 4 metal shelves on the wall next to the cabi-net. Participants are invited to select materi-al from the drawers and arrange it on the shelves.

During the exhibition, SAVED, at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, four individuals or teams: Claire Darley, Maureen Fellinger, Carolyn Gutjahr/Janice Kagermeier and Andy Marko, created their own variations on this interaction.

Andy selected all of the paper stock that was a color other than white or cream. Much of the color stock is used to designate divisions within the drawers. For example within the KK Name collection of 10 drawers- a repeating color pattern is used for the alphabetic sequence: KAA, KAB, etc. removal of these cards also removes the way finding mechanism and changes the experience for the next participant.
