(Tree of Knowledge)

Tree of Knowledge Ink, gesso, collage on rag board mounted card catalog ovals, with silk and rayon thread, brass wire and steel wall support. 2010

The card catalog cards for this piece came from a 1999 Ohio Art Council residency I did at St Mary’s Central Catholic High School in Sandusky, Ohio.  The text on the cards (with details of author, title, and subject) is visible beneath the layers of gesso, ink and collage. A drawing inspired by the divisions of leaf morphology is collaged in the center of each oval.

Celene Hawkins built the metal supporting structure for me. It is designed to fit in and give the effect of a plant like form growing out of a corner.

The fringed ovals suggest eye shapes and evoke another variation of all-seeing and of searching through the experience of perception.
