Red Animals

Red Animals contains two sets of 17 accordion and blind accordion artists' books. Each book is made of recut and altered pages of Golden Nature Guide Books, circa pre 1969.

The labor intensive alteration process is as follows: have paper-backs cut from binding and in half by guillotine paper cutter at Ohio Book Store, paint the animal images with red ink, cover the back-grounds with white gesso, coat the backs with read paste paper mixture, press, re-assemble and glue using paper hinges into long strips, sew strips together with red cotton thread. The original text of the guide books is deliber-ately obscured. Books rest on 7 acrylic and glass 32” circles, held up by cardboard tube spacers and rests on a wooden library stool. Titles of books include: Red Reptiles, Red Spiders, Red Rabbits, Red Weasels, Red Insects, etc.

Installation shown here at the Springfield Museum of Art, part of my exhibition "Always and Everywhere," 2007.
