See and Hear

The texts of See and Hear were created from statements in the 1858 journal of Henry David Thoreau. See contains statements that begin with “See…” or “I see…” Hear contains statements that begin with “Hear…” or “I hear…” An example of the text:

I see now, as I go forth on the river, the first summer shower coming up in the northwest, a dark and well defined cloud with rain falling sheaf-like from it…

See apparently young tad pole now, - judging from their blackness, - now quite free from the eggs or spawn.

Many Emys picta which I see have perfectly fresh and clear black scales right now.

See what I call vernal grass in bloom in many places.

The installation creates a space to sit and read the books. Materials and equipment used in addition to the artists' books (made from laser printed pages in book cloth covered rag board binding- ink drawings on covers): cd with digital image of drawing, lap top computer, digital projector, black theater muslin stretched on wooden frames to cover dropped ceiling, wooden shelves, and wooden chairs.

Installation shown here at the Weston Art Gallery, Cincinnati, OH, as part of the 2007 Exhibition: "Essence of a Thing…. " 2007 group exhibition at the Weston Art Gallery
