Small World

Aisle Gallery
424 Findlay Street 3rd Floor Cincinnati, Ohio 45202

May 28- July 2, 2010

This exhibition features new installations and works on paper inspired by the world of books.

The title refers to a world known through the turning of pages, an ephemeral, but convincing world that builds anew as the content of the book connects to each individual reader’s imagination.  It also refers to the small world we call up when presented with an unanticipated connection.

Small World features shifts in scale and the use of card catalog cards as a base material that continue an exploration into the mystery of how we experience the seen and unseen. There is much going on in the everydayness of our lives that we never see:  from the creatures teeming in the water at the bottom of a glass or under a rock by the backdoor, to the far corner of the living room under the armchair (or even the details of the back of your own hand) at night when the lights are out.

Tactile materials of ink and pencil on paper provide a context of physical familiarity in this work as microbes are juxtaposed with the contents of the utensil drawer and jellyfish find their way into the dark night sky.

Soul Go Forth: Nothing in the world as it shall be (marmoset)    Detail only, below

Ink over graphite on paper. 25 x 29” 2009

Soul Go ForthThe series Soul Go Forth is inspired by the ability to see what we don’t normally see offered by scientific drawings and images. This ability shows us that all is not as it seems in our familiar surroundings. Many things exist that we cannot fully see or experience. I am interested in the overlapping interpretations applied to the seen and the unseen by our worlds of science, literature and religion.

Tree of KnowledgeTree of Knowledge collage, ink and gesso on shaped card catalog cards, rayon and silk thread, rag board, book cloth, brass wire, metal support. 30 x 24 x 18” 2010  when I was an artist-in-residence at St Mary’s Central catholic school in Sandusky, 1999, we used the library’s card catalog as the raw material for our project. One participant cut the centers out of their set of cards. They used the outer section for their piece. The center ovals came home with me to become the main element in this installation.

Each oval has layers of gesso, ink and collage. The halo of bright thread was applied with glue - strand by strand.

Dictionary drawings of leaf morphology inspired the ink on paper drawings collaged as the final layer on each oval.

This piece is available for purchase.
