Cue the gathering darkness. Cue the moonrise. Probably inspired by the illustrations of Jack Pumpkinhead in a copy of Frank Baum’s classic The Marvelous Land of Oz (1904) that came from my grandparent’s attic, here is a pumpkin-head couple from the Sketchbook Index ©2012 in my working piece Guest Guide Book, a 60 drawer card catalog cabinet, that also houses a text index to my sketchbooks, a collection of names that start with 2 Ks and other explorations into organization.

If you look out from inside the house the evening light seems flatly dark. Once you are outside surrounded by it, after your eyes adjust (and you are spared the blindness created by an onslaught of car headlights) you become aware of the layers of shadow transforming the ordinary daytime world. This drawing Lamppost and Shadow©1999 comes from a series inspired by being outside at night near the time of Halloween.
