In solidarity with all students retuning to school this August I post this image of my artists’ book You Can You Cannot.

Learning in school was all or nothing for me. I remember vividly the shame and anxiety of not getting it- different from the less complex and innocent: not knowing, Not getting it for me was mostly in the domain of the left side of the brain: how to multiply and divide fractions, or involved moving through space in an unfamiliar way: how to throw a baseball, how to climb a rope or how to make a 3 dimensional shape with wire.

Like many of my drawings this drawing has a layered structure. You can see the order in which the layers were applied. The first layers are visible through the layers applied later or on top. There is an implication of time passing through this sequencing and also of time standing still as the layers appear to all exist in the same place at the same time.   When I work like this I am thinking about the composition as if it was a kind of snapshot of what my conscious mind feels like. Layers of memory, conscious thought, dream images/patterns, alert messages from emotions and/or senses come and go, sometimes in juxtaposition, sometimes one interrupts others, sometimes one creeps in unbidden or begins to morph mysteriously. All exist as part of the same whole.

SECOND SIGHT is a 24 month project to revisit, reconnect, and share 30+ years of my own studio work (drawing, works on paper, artists books, installations) and featuring work, ephemera and  projects of other artists that have enriched my personal and working life over this time period.

Via weekly posts that move forward by linking some aspect of the previous post to the current one and using tags as a creative way to search the ongoing entries – Second Sight will grow into an alternative archive.

I invite you to join me at any and all points during this probably odd but hopefully compelling voyage.
